Meet our new team members!

New Prevention Projects Coordinator:

Leah Uberseder has 15 years of bridge-building nonprofit experience in conflict resolution, organizational support, fundraising, capacity building and youth development. After a B.A. in Peace & Global Studies from Earlham College, Leah began her career with a focus on international human rights and conflict resolution. A deep desire to find meaningful

work within her own community led her to switch gears and join Girls Incorporated in 2005, where she spent over three years in sexual health and prevention education. A move to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2008 provided the opportunity to hone organizational capacity building, fundraising, and constituent engagement skills on behalf of several national organizations with health justice focused missions. Leah moved back to Holyoke this summer because she literally couldn’t stand to be away from this community any longer, and is extremely excited to be joining the Holyoke Youth Task Force after admiring the commitment and real change-making of its membership for so long.

New Youth Projects Coordinator:

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, José Enrique Cartagena-Ortiz, better know as Kike; move two years ago to Holyoke, Massachusetts, to live more closely to his immediate family and to embrace new educational, professional and personal experiences. After graduating high school, Kike completed a Bachelor Degree in Arts in Education with a concentration in Visual Arts Education at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. Also; he completed a Master Degree in Arts in Education with a concentration in Instructional Systems and Educational Technology at the University of the Sacred Heart in Santurse, Puerto Rico. Kike worked as a Visual Art Teacher in the Department of Education of Puerto Rico in the elementary school level; in addition, he worked as an Instructional Designer at the Center for Development and Support of Academic Technology (or better known by its Spanish acronym as C_DATA,) as part of the Cooperative Title Five Project at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao. For the past two years, Kike worked at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the City of Northampton as a Technology Integration Assistant, advising teachers about the use and integration of technology in their courses and classrooms, supporting them in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of Blogs, Web pages, online courses, tutorials among others technologies, and supporting the district IT department. Also, at JFK Middle School, Kike had the opportunity to be a Spanish language facilitator, translating official documents to Spanish, and supporting the English Language Learners (ELL) students and their parents as translator. During this summer Kike volunteers at Nuestras Raíces, a grass root organization in Holyoke, Massachusetts, helping the organization to improve the technology in their main office, and redesigning and updating their webpage. Recently Kike became the new Youth Program Coordinator at The Holyoke Youth Task Force; he is exited about his new position, because, as he said, he wants to contribute with his skills, knowledge and experience in the development of strong youth leaders and organizations in Holyoke.

Holyoke Youth Task Force on WGBY

HYTF Leads Youth in Social Host Data Collection

The Holyoke Youth Task Force is underway with a data collection project to find out what the community knows about social hosting laws. In Massachusetts, it is against the law to allow anyone under 21, except for your own child or grandchild, to drink alcohol on property you own or rent. Further, you can be sued if your child or another teenager drinks alcohol in your home and then causes harm to themselves or someone else.
HYTF member organization youth are taking to their neighborhoods, grocery stores, and even the mall to survey parents on the realities and perceptions of serving alcohol to minors in the home. Not only will this data help shape the message of the next social marketing campaign implemented by the Holyoke Youth Task Force, it also draws attention to this important issue. Further, by opening up inter-generational conversations around alcohol, the young people are reminding adults that they are a major influencing factor in teen lives.

The HYTF is in need of new members on the Social Marketing committee. If you are able to donate a few hours a month, please contact

Rebecca Masters at (413) 532-6247, ext. 108 or email at rmasters@girlsincholyoke.org.

Youth Commission Hosts Safety in South Holyoke Meeting

One of the aims of the Holyoke Youth Commission is to advocate for other youth in the community. They do this by speaking to their peers about issues and problems they face and bringing these issues to city leaders. After interviewing youth in after-school programs located in the Flats and South Holyoke, it became clear that saftey was a major concern of youth living in these areas. On July 14th, the Youth Commission took action by inviting Mayor Elaine Pluta, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, Holyoke Police, and youth to speak about ways to best address violence and open drug use in these areas. Out of the meeting, came several proactive solutions including the residents taking part in the Text-A-Tip program where residents can anonymously text their local police when crime is happening or to give information about a crime that has taken place (SOLVE 274 637). Also, participants of the meeting are going to take part in the Neighborhood Watch meetings that take place in Wards 1 and 2. The follow up meeting will be taking place at the next Neighborhood Watch in Ward 1. Check out the story online on MassLive.com

Prevention Needs Assessment Survey to Holyoke Youth

The Holyoke Youth Task Force in partnership with the Holyoke Public Schools implemented the Prevention Needs Assessment Survey to all 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in Holyoke Public Schools. The survey shows the risk and protective factors of Holyoke youth. This data is vital in guiding the direction of portions of the HYTF coalition’s work. Please contact Rebecca Masters for survey results at rmasters@girlsincholyoke.org.

The Holyoke Youth Task Force Recognizes Heroes

On June 11th, youth, parents/guardians, and youth workers were recognized at the Holyoke Health Center as the Holyoke Youth Task Force honored outstanding Holyoke Heroes! Through the months of May and June, the Holyoke Youth Task Force asked community-based organizations, schools, youth, and the community at-large to nominate local heroes from the community to be recognized at the Holyoke Youth Task Force annual recognition event. Traditionally, this event had only recognized outstanding youth in the community. This year, those people who have helped youth succeed were also honored: parents/guardians and youth workers! Over forty nominees were recognized, and three in each catagory were specially selected by the Holyoke Youth Commission to be honored. The winners were as follows:Youth Workers: Jude Kallok, Andrew Melendez, Amanda Melemed Parents/Guardians: Heri Acevedo, Martiza Santiago, Parents from the Girls Inc After School programYouth: Iliana Cabon, Crystal Duck, Hector Lasanta.

Afterschool Guide On HYTF Website — With Help of Youth!

If you look to the bottom left of these very words, you’ll find a map with a link. This map leads to something very handy for Holyoke parents looking to find quality, after-school and out-of-school time programs for their children. With a simple click of the mouse, parents and care-givers can locate programs in Holyoke that are close to school, work, or home. Just as convenient, these programs are listed by age and focus area in the near by yellow “Directory”.

Guided by web consultant and experienced youth worker, Jared Libby, youth from Holyoke Youth Task Force member agencies, El Arco Iris and Girls Inc. of Holyoke, were allowed the opportunity to create the cyber map, get a taste of website designing, and most importantly help the community!

The Directory for Afterschool and Summer Programs was develped by the WestMOST Network, the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative and its partner organizations and was funded by a grant from the MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education.
