Youth are the experts of the community because they live in the community in a way that adults do not. If you were to ask a Holyoke Youth Commissioner why it’s important to have a Youth Commission in the city, they’d probably say “When’s the last time you walked in the streets, played in the parks, and went to schools?” Who is the best person to solve problems? The experts!
The Holyoke Youth Commission is comprised of approximately 20 youth, ages 13+, who reflect the socioeconomic, racial, and sexual diversity of Holyoke, and represent multiple neighborhoods and wards. The Holyoke Youth Commission meets weekly to work on projects and programs to meet the needs of Holyoke youth. Recent accomplishments include: Coordinating Holyoke Youth Candidate Forums, drop out prevention and teen pregnancy prevention Facebook pages, public speaking and Text-A-Tip trainings for youth, and Photovoice presentations. The Holyoke Youth Commission recruits twice a year in a comprehensive application and interview process, which will be announced on our website when it is open.
